Local Coalitions – Prevention Resource Center – Region 3

Local Coalitions

Who Participates in Community Coalitions?

People involved in coalitions share one basic trait—they are determined to make a difference. If you’re committed to the idea of improving our communities, reducing drug use, and ensuring better lives for us all, consider one of the drug-prevention coalitions below. The PRC3 is pleased to assist and support those who:

  • Coordinate community services to cover the most territory possible and avoid duplication of efforts
  • Efficiently and effectively use limited resources
  • Build public support for prevention efforts
  • Work to identify community needs, develop the resources to address those needs, and provide a link between individuals in need of assistance and the systems of care in their community

If you’re an individual, service provider, or business seeking to become involved in the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention efforts within your community, this is the place to look. Unless otherwise noted, the groups listed below have open memberships and welcome your involvement. If you’re involved in an ATOD prevention, intervention, or treatment coalition in our region, and don’t see your group listed below, please contact us. We look forward to meeting you, and including your group on this list.

Our Community Partnerships

The Center for Children’s Health

The Center for Children’s Health, led by Cook Children’s hospital, is home to the Community-wide Children’s Health Assessment and Planning Survey (CCHAPS), Community Health Outreach, and Community Health Research.

The Center’s goal is to create aligned collaborations that will allow us to make our North Texas region one of the healthiest places to raise a child.

Challenge of Tarrant County Coalitions

Several college-based coalitions on a mission to reduce substance abuse at the University of Texas at Arlington, Weatherford College, and Texas Christian University. Informal networking serves as a gateway to social services in Tarrant County.

Dallas Area Drug Prevention Partnership (DADPP)

The coalition is comprised of concerned citizens, law enforcement personnel, educators, substance abuse prevention and treatment professionals, health care providers and government officials who have joined forces and are facilitating accurate data collection, parent and student education, media messages, and community outreach.

DADPP is an outgrowth of the Dallas County Cheese/Heroin Task Force, founded in March 2007. Originally this task force was established solely to address the community crisis of Dallas youth using and dying from the use of cheese/heroin, the often lethal combination of black tar heroin and nighttime pain relievers.
In January of 2008, the Task Force decided by official vote that it would work toward the goal of transforming itself into a permanent Dallas area drug coalition.

Hood County Substance Abuse Council

Hood County Substance Abuse Council was implemented to confront youth substance abuse in Hood County. They accomplish this by identifying needs, educating the community, mobilizing resources, developing collaborations, and advocating for sound public policy.

Hunt County Interagency Network

Status and capacity of member agencies to provide services (Salvation Army’s Coat Closet, electricity program via TXU Energy) is updated, and announcements about community wide events are made. Links 50 area health & service agencies for information exchange, service needs identification, and referral encouragement.

Impact Communities

The five Impact Community Coalitions (Dallas, Red Oak, Navarro, Waxahachie, and NE Ellis) are made up of concerned community members working together to prevent youth substance use and increase youth resiliency. These coalitions partner with volunteers representing youth, parents, churches, civic organizations, media, business, schools, government, law enforcement and other groups. The goal of each coalition is to mobilize their community to prevent underage drinking and drug use.

Texans for Safe and Drug-free Youth

Membership organization for interested individuals and service organizations supporting and in learning about underage drinking reduction in Texas. Texas’ only state-wide organization based in Austin working solely to reduce underage drinking through policy initiatives at the state level, and through consultation with local coalitions.
